Impact Story: Blended & Baffled

When my partner and I decided to blend our families, we knew it would come with some challenges. We were bringing together four girls, four girls with four sets of  preferences, four extremely different personalities and four thousand possible explanations for their sudden mood shift! Writing this, I’m starting to question my own sanity!

We knew there would be days where we did know how to settle a dispute or what punishment would be fair for all; but what we didn’t know is that one day we would have to sit all four of them down and prepare them for a psychological war at school, where they will be on opposing sides.

See, our family is not only biologically blended, we are racially blended as well, so you can imagine the position we are put in as parents when ideologies like Critical Race Theory(CRT) are spotted in our district’s curriculum. CRT, as it is being implemented in our schools, creates a Marxist dichotomy of privileged or disadvantaged; oppressor or oppressed; racist or victim or racism. This leaves no room for unification. What are we supposed to do at dinner, have our white daughters, who really are half Mexican (but I guess that doesn’t matter because their skin is white), apologize to our black daughters for their whiteness and inherent bias? Make it make sense!

As parents I think we can all agree that we want our  children to grow up to be kind, hardworking, happy humans. We want them to love themselves and develop the ability to extend that love to others based on commonalities and  the ability to empathize with others that they may not understand or agree with.

We as parents have to continue to fight for the future of our children! The actions we take today will create the world they live in tomorrow. So ask yourself, what do you want that to look like?
